Screed boards are specifically designed for the purpose of leveling sand or other fine aggregate materials before the installation of pavers. A concrete mixer is intended for mixing concrete rather than leveling materials, and a hand rake—though helpful for spreading sand—does not provide the precise leveling needed that a screed board offers. Thus, the use of a screed board is crucial for achieving the desired level and smoothness of the base before laying pavers.
